Think about the counseling related question/phenomena that you selected in week one. Using your text and other peer reviewed resources, think about a project that you could design to study that question/phenomena qualitatively. In your response, answer the following questions:

    • What is the question you would want to answer?
    • Which qualitative methodology would be best to use to answer your question?
    • Who are your participants?
    • What data would you gather? And how would you gather it?
    • What ethical considerations would you need to consider?

Support your response with at least two scholarly resources. Complete your initial post by Day 4. In order to be eligible for maximum points, respond by Day 6 to two or more peers (with responses on separate days) , which may include your instructor, who provided different examples/articles than the one you selected. Include all references in APA format and respond to your peers by doing one or more of the following:

    • Asking a probing question
    • Sharing an insight from having read someone's posting
    • Offering and supporting an opinion
    • Validating an idea with your own experience
    • Making a suggestion
    • Expanding on peers or instructor postings

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made. See the discussion board rubric for details with respect to grading.

ASSIGNMENT 3: THE ARGUMENT FOR QUALITATIVE REASEARCH IN COUNSELING

Most empirical research studies that are published in counseling journals employ a quantitative methodology. However, several authors have made an argument for the use of more qualitative research. For this week’s assignment you will read two articles and pick one of those articles to respond to the questions below. Please read the following two articles:

Hays, D. G., & Wood, C. (2011). Infusing qualitative traditions in counseling research designs. Journal of Counseling & Development, 89, 288-295

and Palinkas, L. A. (2014). Qualitative and mixed-methods in mental health services and implementation research. Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology, 43, 851-861

Both articles can be located using the Lamar University library website. After reviewing each article, respond to the following questions:

    • Give a brief summary/synopsis of the article and the position of the author(s)
    • What is the argument for using qualitative research to study counseling phenomena
      • Do you agree? Why or why not?
    • What is one challenge presented by the author(s) why qualitative research is a challenge to conduct?
    • How can counseling researchers overcome the challenge you discussed above?

This assignment should be a total of approximately 3-5 pages, not including the cover page and references page. This assignment is worth 75 points. Please see assignment rubric for details.
